i just came across two sites giving good
advice on how to use (and not use) blogs in the classroom. James Farmer
has two posts, one on how to use blogs and another on how not to use them. And Doug of Borderland comments on Farmer's posts.

On how not to use blogs in education, Farmer's main points (my summary of his summary of his paper "Blogs @ Anywhere: High fidelity online communication") are:

university level, Barbara Ganning has a different perspective. See her BlogTalk paper, "Blogging as a Dynamic, Transformative Medium in an American Liberal Arts Classroom",
in which she discusses her use of blogs in the classroom, including a
class blog that ties together students' individual blogs,
communication, and class management.

Doug supports Farmer's main points with his own experience, although
noting that more centralized management systems are appropriate for
younger learners. Along these lines, he notes the need for more
conversation on using blogs in elementary schools, giving several
examples, one of which is more teacher oversight at the lower levels:

Mainly, younger kids have a very different notion about private vs.
public information. I know this is an issue for all students, but
younger kids have a harder time recognizing personal boundaries. A
kindergartener, for instance, would be far more likely to tell her
classmates that her mother is in jail than would a 5th grader, for
instance.

of blogs in education, asserts in his paper:

While the resulting feedback indicated a degree of satisfaction and
no objection to the use of blogs, there was little to indicate any
significant shift in student perceptions and activity in the learning
environments. While it is beyond the scope of this examination to argue
hard and fast rules, this could be attributed, along with other factors
such as the nature of assessment, to the use of blogs as collaborative
areas without the use of aggregation.

There are quite a few comments on Farmer's pages, indicating that
the environment affects the implementation of Farmer's guidelines. With
respect to foreign language learners, in particular, we need to be
careful. Still, let me emphasize Farmer's point on keeping RSS in
students' minds. As he says,

Ignore RSS at your peril: Probably the biggest mistake that adopters
tend to make is to ignore RSS or just through it a casting glance. The
problem is that these people aren’t bloggers and just don’t understand.
Without RSS blogs would pretty much just be extensions of geocities
pages. Your learners are NEVER going to surf each others sites everyday
and the majority of them won’t even go to that funky web-based
aggregator you set-up.

RSS, or news, feeds are like subscribing to a newspaper or magazine:
it comes to you instead of you going to the corner store to buy a copy.
Why use news feeds? Well, mainly (1) to save time and (2) to be exposed
to a variety of opinions. More concretely on time, you, and your
students, can subscribe to all of the class blogs and other blogs of
interest so that instead of clicking on 10, 20, or more different
sites, all new posts are aggregated at one's own site (and perhaps
another aggregation at a single class site). On the latter reason, you
and your students can create search feeds for news groups and news (via
Google News or Yahoo News)
and for websites and blogs that can keep a current flow of information
on topics related to class studies, projects, or personal interests.
Participating in knowledge networks is crucial for students to develop
an awareness of audience, competing values, and diverse perspectives,
which, in turn, is essential for learning to write thoughtful and
complex responses to and essays on an issue.

comment on postings that adhere to the protocols and norms of behaviour
in the chosen communication network is expected to enhance the
learners’ reflective, meta-cognitive and written skills as well as
management of their learning.

Ruth Reynard's Avoiding the 5 Most Common Mistakes in Using Blogs with Students (via Stephen Downes) has some good guidelines for using blogs in the classroom. Reynard teaches graduate students, but her five mistakes to avoid are sound for all levels:

These principles actually work for any course assignment or technology. For instance, it helps students if they understand the purpose of a particular assignment. If they consider something to be busy work, motivation will be lower and their work can reflect their perception of the assignment. And so on.

Reynard's article is similar to two older, brief posts by James Farmer. Misuse of the environment refers to what Farmer wrote about not using blogs for purposes they're not intended, in which he includes discussion boards, listservs, learning management systems, and group blogs. Ineffective contextualization is similar to his assertion that blogs "should be key, task driven, elements of your course".

In the case of blogging, the most effective use of this tool is in the area of self reflection or thought processing. As such, there must be concepts for students to think through, various resources and content segments to process, or ideas to construct. To simply ask students to blog without this level of planning will lead to frustration for the students. In other words, there must be a certain amount of content preparation already covered or made accessible for students before blogging will really support the learning process.

Self-reflection is certainly one reason why I have a blog. But is it "the most effective use of this tool"? It's not clear to me, but she seems to be equating self-reflection with thinking through ideas. Self-reflection for me is learning about myself, who I am, and where I'm going. It might also be about examining how I learn. But thinking through ideas is more about problem-solving and learning about the ideas, which may or may not include reflecting about myself and my learning.

While a blog can also provide social placement of students or academic placement of students within a group, blogs are fundamentally individual in their purpose and essence. That is, while comments can be added or ideas posted following a blog entry, these sit outside the initial posting--blogs are not wikis or online discussion forums, therefore, if individual self-reflection is the central benefit to the learning process, instructors must plan carefully as to when in the course self-reflection will enhance the learning process for each student.

Rather, it's influenced, even shaped, by its interactions with those other blogs. That is, I read what others are posting and respond to them, and they may do likewise, in an iterative fashion. Thus, others' posts do not "sit outside the initial posting" nor does the "initial posting" sit outside of them, but they are interconnected in an ongoing conversational web consisting of parallel posts in my blog's case and, in the case of others, via posts and comments. Thus, blogs are fundamentally social.

Paradoxically, what can facilitate social learning is the individualization of blogs, as Farmer notes in his article:

Indeed, for MacColl et al. the individualisation of the blogging experience was significant in that it allowed for the students to express themselves through “heavily customising their blogs and requesting more advanced functionality”. This control over information is, they surmise, critical to “fostering appropriation of the technology for unintended uses” and plays heavily in their future plans to “explore extensions that approximate the fluency of a shared paper-based journal, as a basis for the serendipitous backtalk that reveals unanticipated problems or surprise opportunities”. Invariably, it would seem, aggregation and individualisation would play a key role in this.

Although Farmer doesn't use the term "autonomy," it can be understood through the terms "customising," student "control over information," "unintended uses," "serendipitous backtalk," and, of course, "individualisation." Note that it is self-determination within a context of social interaction via aggregation that fosters autonomy and also learning.

I've
used blogs in my classes for five years with university graduate
students. I've found them to be extremely helpful in certain
circumstances but only when there is clarity for students in their use.
Students who object to the inclusion of blogs in a course are usually
objecting to what they perceive will be just one more task on top of a
myriad of others or simply some busy work that will not benefit their
learning. Older students can also reject the notion of "publication"
that is inherent with blogging. Each of these objections can be
addressed by an effective and innovative instructor by careful planning
and skillful management. There are, however, several common mistakes
that should be avoided when using blogs in instruction. I have made all
of these mistakes and have learned how to address each one proactively.

As with any instructional tool or learning support, without a clear
context within which the tool is to be used, students will not
understand the benefit to their learning and will, ultimately, reject
the use of the tool. In order to effectively contextualize the use of
an instructional tool, instructors must think carefully exactly where
the tool will be used in the flow of the course, how often the tool
will or might be used, and how necessary the tool is to the learning
process. In the case of blogging, the most effective use of this tool
is in the area of self reflection or thought processing. As such, there
must be concepts for students to think through, various resources and
content segments to process, or ideas to construct. To simply ask
students to blog without this level of planning will lead to
frustration for the students. In other words, there must be a certain
amount of content preparation already covered or made accessible for
students before blogging will really support the learning process.
While a blog can also provide social placement of students or academic
placement of students within a group, blogs are fundamentally
individual in their purpose and essence. That is, while comments can be
added or ideas posted following a blog entry, these sit outside the
initial posting--blogs are not wikis or online discussion forums,
therefore, if individual self-reflection is the central benefit to the
learning process, instructors must plan carefully as to when in the
course self-reflection will enhance the learning process for each
student. Please note: there are additional benefits that instructors
can glean from blogs in terms of helping access student voice and
understanding student progress in their idea or concept construction,
but the instructional use of the blog tool is mostly about the
individual benefit to students first in deciding when and how to use
blogs in instruction.

2. Unclear Learning Outcomes

Following on from designing the placing of blog use based on the
instructional flow, is the notion of designing blog use based on
learning outcomes.

Learning outcomes are much more than course objectives. Learning
outcomes begin with course objectives; however, include student
learning needs and objectives, and future application of the learning.
Therefore, understanding of the global nature of the learning outcomes
of a course in crucial to good planning and use of learning resources
and tools. Choosing the blog tool in a course would mean that the
transferable skills of critical thinking, thought processing and
knowledge construction would be well supported and recorded. If the
instructor is unclear as to what the learning outcomes of the course
are and is focused only on course objectives, the potential of the blog
tool may not be maximized. The following are several ways in which the
use of blogs in instruction can develop new higher level thinking
skills:

Analysis: A blog can help students process
their thoughts and ideas for analysis. There is no better way to begin
to see the importance of analysis as when there is a goal of
articulating your thoughts for explanation to others. That is, if two
ideas are presented together in support of one concept, self-reflective
students must learn to a) distinguish the ideas, b) understand the
differences between and similarities between, c) understand where the
connection points are if any, d) decide, based on analysis, which one
(if any) they will include and build upon in their own learning
process. This is a highly constructive process and the skills needed
must be intentionally encouraged and can be visibly recorded in a blog.

Synthesis:
As part of the analysis, it is important that students can synthesis
the original ideas and the new ideas they will articulate. The
synthesis of ideas is crucial to the process of working ideas and
incorporating new ideas into their own thinking.

New ideas:
Grasping new ideas through analysis and synthesis means that students
can move ahead with their thinking and move closer towards
transformation in learning and application. Information is not what
makes a new idea. Information must be processed and applied before new
ideas will emerge for students. Too many instructors remain at the
information-exchange stage with students and do not move them towards
new ideas. A blog can help develop these thinking skills as well as
capture the new ideas well for others to view and absorb.

新思路:通过分析和综合手段,把握新思路,学生能够推动自己的思维,并更加接近学习和应用的转变。信息并不能产生新思路。对学生而言,信息必须经过处理并应用,才能产生新思路。太多的教师停留在与学生的信息交换阶段,而不朝前走,产生新观点。网志可以帮助发展这些思维技能,以及捕捉新思路,便与他人查看及吸收。










Application:
Without application, new ideas are not "owned" by students in their
learning. That is, new ideas can only become meaningful and relevant
for students when then are directly applied in real life contexts of
practice and use. This stage can also be well captured in a blog and,
in fact, the entire thinking process of each student can be captured
and made accessible for instructors and other students to explore.

Note: Each of these stages of thought development must be
intentionally supported by instructors through comments and feedback
and expectations communicated to each student. Additionally, grades
should reflect the entire process of learning, not simply the end
product, if students are to understand the value to their own learning.

3. Misuse of the environment

As I mentioned before, blogs are not wikis and they are not online
discussion forums. The essential difference between a blog and other
online tools is that it is intended to be an individual publication: a
one-way monologue or self-post to which others may comment but do not
contribute. The original post remains as the person who posted it
wanted it to be. This is important to realize in the instructional
setting. If a discussion is desired, then blogging would not be the
tool of choice. In the same way, if journaling is the intended goal,
then an online discussion forum would not be the tool of choice. It is
important to realize, as an instructor, that if you desire a
journal-type setting, then your comments should be supportive and
constructive and not intrusive otherwise the student(s) will cease to
post. Blogs can have a discussional nature if there are many
subscribers and participants. That is, you can "hear" from every
student on one topic or another by creating a blog ring to which they
can subscribe. The self-posting, however, remains the same. That is,
unlike a wiki, where changes can be made to posts and documents, in a
blog, the initial post always stands and is simply responded to and not
altered in any way. When using blogs to encourage students to
articulate their thoughts students can become empowered and feel that
they are developing their own voice in the learning process.
Instructors can also "glimpse" students' thought processes and become
much more aware of their learning journey.

Grading of blogs should
have clear rubrics so that students do not become confused as to how
their work is being evaluated. As blog posts are essentially a series
of statements, I have suggested elsewhere that, depending on the
learning outcomes of your course, specific statement types to recognize
in your assessment rubric might be:



  • Reflection statements (self positioning within the course concepts);

  • Commentary statements (effective use of the course content in discussion and analysis);

  • New idea statements (synthesis of ideas to a higher level); and








  • Application statements (direct use of the new ideas in a real life setting).


As already mentioned, blogging can move students forward in their
thinking, help them process to a higher level of understanding, and
apply the learning to a practical context. If the grading is not clear
and the tool is simply made available to students, not only will
students become discouraged, they will likely not participate. As I
have seen on numerous occasions, it is when students continue regular
use of the blog throughout a course that their learning is truly
supported and their thinking truly challenged. It is, therefore,
important to keep students focused with regular reminders and to keep
expectations clear and grading transparent. Timelines for completion
should also be set so that students know how much time they have to use
the blog tool.

5. Inadequate time allocation

The notion of adequate time is not discussed often enough in the use of
technology in learning. Just as students are different in their
processing time within any learning context, so adequate time should be
given for every student to complete work using online tools such as the
blog. Instructors should be reasonable and if possible, leaving the
blog tool open until the end of the course. This will help students
maximize the benefits of the tool and will also provide more time for
students who need it. As online tools provide a more immediate learning
context for students, they also usually encourage more participation
from students. This participation in turn provides more text or other
response types from students and ultimately more for instructors to
read through or view and grade. Therefore, instructors should plan
ahead and plan well for the increased work that will likely take place
when their students are using online tools.

Students should be fully aware of what the expectations are and how
the tool is being used in their learning process. Once students
understand this, they are more likely to participate and to a greater
degree of critical awareness. While there are many mistakes that can be
made in using any new tool in instruction, instructors should have a
question and answer mindset in their use. It is important to find out
what problems or challenges exist and to find solutions quickly.
Instructors who use online tools must be innovative in their approach,
creative in their course design, and flexible in their methods in order
to ensure successful learning experiences for their students. While
there is no one-way to use any instructional resource well, it is
important to integrate the use of any tool or learning resources intro
the overall course design intentionally and totally supporting the
learning outcomes for the students.

That may not be the most surprising finding from a report released last week by the Educause Center for Applied Research, the analytical arm of the nonprofit group that promotes effective technology use in higher education. But it certainly provides a jumping-off point for an investigation into how students use information technology in college and how it can be harnessed to improve the learning experience.

In at least one central respect, proponents of technology in the classroom are on to something: Most students (60.9 percent) believe it improves their learning.

The changes in technological habits aren’t revolutionary per se, as the authors point out; rather, students are making “evolutionary” gains in access to the Internet for everyday uses, inside the classroom and out. Perhaps the most visible of these changes is the continuing increase in the proportion of students with laptops, which has grown to 73.7 percent of respondents (while an almost-total 98.4 percent own a computer of some kind). More surprisingly, over half of laptop owners don’t bring them to class at all, with about a quarter carrying them to lectures at least once a week.

The amount of time spent on the Internet also shows no sign of abating, with an average of about 18 hours a week, for any purpose — and, on the extreme end, some 6.6 percent of respondents (mostly male) saying they spend more than a full-time job’s worth of 40 hours online a week. Most students use broadband, more are on wireless connections, and “smart phones” — all-in-one communications and personal data assistants — are also on the rise, with 12 percent owning one.

What they’re doing when they’re online is also changing somewhat, with the rise of Facebook and other social networking sites as the clearest trend this year (to 80.3 percent from 72.3 percent in 2006), along with streaming video and course management software, which 46.1 percent of respondents said they use several times a week or more (compared with 39.6 percent in 2006).

The authors of the study, which surveyed 27,864 students at 103 two- and four-year colleges and universities, note that most undergraduates today are “digital natives” who have grown up immersed in technology in some form. But the “millennials” aren’t necessarily ready to cast off the yoke of human interaction and learn solely within virtual 3-D environments wired directly to the brain. The study finds “themes of skepticism and moderation alongside enthusiasm,” such that 59 percent preferred a “moderate rather than extensive use of IT in courses.”

Instead, students appear to segment different modes of communication for different purposes. E-mail, Web sites, message boards and Blackboard? Viable ways of connecting with professors and peers. Same for chat, instant messaging, Facebook and text messages? Not necessarily, the authors write, because students may “want to protect these tools’ personal nature.”

In short, as students become more and more connected to each other through various online mediums, they’re also becoming more untethered, with laptops and smart phones keeping them physically apart. As a result, the “emerging Web 2.0 paradigm” of “immersive environments” and dynamic information promise (or threaten?) to upend traditional pedagogies and even the way students learn, the authors conclude.

That could mean that some professors might have to play catch-up, according to the report, “The ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2007″ — a sentiment also indicated by some of the students in answers to the survey’s open-ended questions.

How IT Affects Learning

The epigraph to the report’s sixth chapter, from a student’s written comments, goes a long way toward summarizing what the authors say is the place of technology in the college setting today: “IT is not a good substitute for good teaching. Good teachers are good with or without IT and students learn a great deal from them. Poor teachers are poor with or without IT and students learn little from them.”

Seventy percent of the students polled said information technology helps them do research, a finding that is not surprising in light of the continuing popularity of Google and Wikipedia among undergraduates (sometimes to the consternation of their professors ). But that finding also encompasses online library research and article databases.

Skeptics might point out that even students themselves are ambivalent when it comes to using the Internet and other digital tools for class, as the survey highlights. But the study’s introduction, written by Chris Dede of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, suggests what professors can expect from digital natives’ evolving modes of learning, what he calls “neomillennial learning styles.”

As new methods of interacting with information become more ubiquitous, he suggests, citing Second Life-type virtual immersion environments as an example, students will grow up with different expectations and preferences for acquiring knowledge and skills. The implication is less of an emphasis on the “sage on the stage” and a linear acquisition process focusing on a “single best source,” focusing instead on “active learning” that comes from synthesizing information from multiple types of media.

A College That Embraces IT

What does a learning environment that embraces new technologies look like? It’s not clear, but it might resemble a classroom at the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Mass. The institution, which opened in 2002, found itself having to start from scratch in every way possible, including in its design of an information architecture. The person in charge of that project was Joanne Kossuth, the chief information officer and vice president for development at the college.

Where some institutions have had to scramble to adapt to evolving technological needs, Olin did it all at once — from the ground up. The result is a much more integrated, forward-looking approach to IT.

The college has a 24/7 laptop loan program, which allows students to be in constant communication with each other and helps encourage them to work together on projects, so that “you’ll see students that go out and use things like Google Docs,” editing online in real time, she said.

Freshmen come in to the college already well acquainted with social networking and used to course management software, mainly because of its increasing use in high school, Kossuth said. They use a campus-hosted wiki to find rides. They work with administrators to improve software offerings. In other words, the students are at the cutting edge, while some faculty are working to catch up.

Still, in this tech-savvy environment, some face-to-face interaction is still preferred. At the help desk, she said, proposals for chat and text messaging services met with skepticism because students preferred to e-mail or come in themselves. In general, the ECAR report found a number of negative comments about help desks’ effectiveness, suggesting their importance to a smooth IT operation.

The report also highlighted a number of gaps and trends through longitudinal comparisons of the past three years’ worth of survey data:

Leisure devices, such as handheld video and music players (read: iPods), have transcended the gender gap. Where there used to be a difference between males’ and females’ ownership of the players just two years ago, the gap has disappeared, with 83.1 percent of 18- to 19-year-olds owning one.

Starting Next Round Of Personal Research

I learn most when I’m challenged to justify or explain the rationale behind my classroom practice and the choices about the tasks I set for my class. The challenge can come in the form of a blog post that questions, a comment response that draws assumptions or a reflective research tool that has me watching a DVD of one of my lessons and coding it according to researched guidelines. And as a learner, I don’t always come with a satisfactory answer but every challenge helps.

I’ve used inquiry research projects in my classrooms for over ten years now - initially when it was called Resource Based Learning, then rebadged as Problem Based Learning when I moved to my current school and now referred to as the inquiry approach. I’ve used models including McKenzie’s Research Cycle, our local TSOF (RIP) model then to the recent work in this area by Kath Murdoch. Ten years ago when I team taught with one of the most innovative (and influential) teachers I’ve come across, we both developed the rationale that inquiry work (RBL was our name at the time) was great in terms of allowing students choice and control in their learning but adding the final presentation in front of their peers added another layer of purpose to their work. We both trialled webquests with our classes in and around 1999/2000 but found that the process was too scripted and the reliance on Web-only resources to be too restrictive.

Students would do their own RBL topics - sometimes it was glorious success (I recall a 1997 presentation on The Wolf by a Year Six girl where she role played a wolf, had her best friend read scripted questions as a news reporter and the research findings flowed from this fictional interview) or dismal failure. An unmotivated student back in 1999 simply drew a lopsided pyramid on the white board in texta and trotted his theories about aliens constructing the pyramids. And the class was so well versed in the art of positive feedback and constructive criticism (my diplomatic nature coming to the fore) that after the silence that ensued, the first comment was, “I really like your pyramid drawing.”

Of course, the use of the internet has been a boon to this form of learning as the students are not just limited to what the school library has in stock. Which also means the issue of teaching effective digital literacy skills becomes of utmost importance. So, the final presentation became a purpose for all of the questions and answers. It was superior to handing in something to the teacher because the audience expanded to their classroom colleagues. The presentations started to evolve as the technology at the students’ disposal became easier to utilize. We went from student prepared overheads to handouts to designed displays then to booking the computing room so that the data projector could be utilized. With the move to a new school, it seemed the inquiry learning approach was a low priority and it has been part of my role to infuse it into teachers’ practices - with varying success.

With the advent of interactive whiteboards in the school and a very inspiring session as part of our Middle Schooling cluster, I began the idea of Personal Research Projects with my class where the students could research a topic of their choice that would be geared towards a peer presentation. This started last year when I combed the SACSA S.O.S.E outcomes tracking general topics as a starting point and the inquiry process was combined with a student initiated approach.. Students could make a choice about their topic and their research process was then geared towards a final presentation to their classmates. Then this year under the guiding principles of our recently Middle Years Learning Unit vision which has the development of student initiative as one of its desired outcomes. To that end, the Personal Research Projects (renamed as to not be confused with the IB version of Personal Projects which has a very different focus) were introduced for all four of the MYLU classes with the general choices of (a) your own choice, (b) something new and (c) something from the wider world spread over terms two to four.

I’ve already blogged about the Term Two projects from my room so my original intent was a quick update on my students’ start to this term. There was some professional disagreement around our learning team table about how to structure and start the Term Three theme of something new. As my role includes leading out in any area to do with information literacy, I devised a student driven way to determine new topics. With my class, I discussed the idea that for something to be really new, you would to need to barely know anything about the topic and in fact, you might not even know that it exists. So here’s what we did.

Every student had a sheet of paper and I decided that this term I would join in the process and produce a Personal Research Project of my own. On this paper, each student wrote down topics that they had covered in the past then we rotated the papers around the room. In 30 second bursts, each student would suggest a new topic for their peer from a broad list of categories we brainstormed up on the interactive whiteboard. There’s a bit of pressure involved to get something down so not all suggestions were inspired but it was very interesting to see what did get on the list and considering there were 30 kids trying to produce 30 unique topic lists (that’s 900 potentially unique topics!) it went pretty well.

The students then narrowed down their possibilities to two or three that looked interesting. You can see mine are bold underlined. Armed with their final choice, we headed to the computing room where the students used Quintura and Kartoo to generate key word mind map diagrams to assist with the start of their research. See these diagrams as an example of how the key words were generated by the visual search engines.

So I think that my kids are off to a good start. But as I wrote earlier, there was not consensus about this approach when I introduced it to my learning team colleagues. Riding on last term’s success and buoyed by the fact that the students had developed some promising research and presentation skills and were highly motivated by the control they had over their work, I was surprised that some of the team wanted more say in what the students in their classes would be working on. Their point of view that something new could be decided upon by the teacher because that choice would in fact be new, and they would allocate choices within that topic. It was hard to argue against because their choice was to look at charities and community programs (Guide Dogs, Amnesty, Doctors Without Borders etc.) and that is a worthwhile thing for students to be looking at. I suppose I felt (as did my planning partner) that the student initiated component is too important to disregarded. Sure, if one of my students wanted to investigate a charitable organisation, fine, but for me the process of investigation and questioning and constructing learning with a purpose in mind is more important than all kids being “guided” into a defined area of focus. Another example that not all teachers see things in a particular way or necessarily value different aspects and approaches in equal ways.

Anyway, to wind this post up, I have stated before that I was particularly impressed with the presentation process and that consideration was given to audience needs in their accompanying slides. I emphasised the “more is less” approach which is exactly some of the advice being offered by Dan Meyer in some of his great posts on slide design. I wandered into Christian Long’s blog post where he was exploring aspects of one of Dan’s more recent posts - it seems I’ve been commenting there a fair bit this week. I used his general theme of innovative use of slides in the classroom to expand on why I think my students’ presentations were a great learning experience.

….the lense with which I want to examine your take comes from my own classroom and our “Personal Research Projects” program that I have led out alongside our middle school teachers. Using an inquiry-centred learning approach, my students developed presentations on a topic of their own choice over the course of two months. I blogged about the process recently so I won’t go through the details here but I tended to err on the side of guidance rather than requirements. I wanted the students to find their own way through, be open to advice and be prepared to have their presentation critiqued by their peers. So I know that when you describe the “Death by Powerpoint” presentation classroom, it’s not mine and I dare say there are many teachers like me where the end product is just the start of the conversation. With my students, we negotiated together what we believed good presentations to be about. We designed a rubric that the kids themselves would use during the presentations. I talked about the slides complementing their research, that clear well chosen images convey meaning that excessive text cannot, the importance of considering your audience’s needs and how eye contact conveys respect to your audience.

Yes, Powerpoint was the choice of every student (but not mandated by me) and as they watched each presentation, the learning was there in masses. It was there in the feedback that the students gave each other, scaffolded initially by me, but when students say comments like, “I wasn’t interested in Roman History before your presentation but now I want to know more”, it’s pay dirt. It happens when the students who can’t resist the call of the animated bullet points, clicking through them furiously because they’ve just realised they don’t add anything to their message. It happens when a student proclaims an animé drawing as their own work scanned into a slide but someone eagle eyed spots the plagiarism via a watermarked URL on the corner of the slide. It happens when a well intentioned student’s presentation goes over the twenty minute mark because they didn’t want to leave anything out only to realise that they’ve lost the interest of the class. Done tactfully, which is where teacher guidance is crucial, the conversation emanating from these presentations has initiated and cemented learning about the research process, the importance of citing sources, catering for your audience’s learning needs and yes, learning that “less is more” when it comes to conveying meaning, ideas and information across to your peers.

The passion and intentionality of your approach with using PPt with your kids is to be commended on many levels. Best of all is your conviction that the ‘process’ itself was more powerful than the end result, and by process I mean in ‘review’ as much as in ‘creation.’

All I will add to your original comment is that while ‘process’ is vital (and the ‘discovery’ that comes with it), the clear ‘constraints’ we put on the project offer significant value as well (and ‘challenge’). If our kids think always in terms of audience (both in and out of the class, regardless of ‘grades’), then the ‘constraints’ are tied to the audience’s needs and willingness to pay attention/care. Yes, we want kids to co-create the process, but we also want them to know WHY they are doing what they are doing…and constraints give us a place to push against, as opposed to limits.

And I while I am sure that my process had its constraints in place, his point to me means that clearly documenting and justifying the purpose of the project is as crucial as allowing the students freedom to explore what they see as interesting and important. Especially at this age (10 -12 year olds) their first taste of choice based learning can be a heady experience and not everyone bounces back easily from a rocky landing if they get their process wrong, burn time chasing unimportant details or misread my verbal suggestions. Cushioning in terms of clear written guidelines, explicit demonstrations of process and regular reviews of progress will give every student a shot at the glowing feedback and satisfaction of an attentive and interested audience.

    Jo, it’s a bit like baring your soul at times - but, I cannot talk about teachers needing to open about their practice and learn by reflecting on their teaching if I don’t do it myself. Part of it is also having enough guts to admit that not everything flows as it should, than there is always room for improvement and that unconscious hypocrisy runs through every teacher’s veins.

    The choice/constraints issue is a very tricky thing to manage, and I’m glad you mentioned it. A good project has some of each, I believe, and finding that balance is key. I especially liked the quote at the end. What I want to see in my own students is the realization, for themselves, that they’ve changed, been enlarged somehow, and accomplished something that they didn’t think they could do before they started. I’m organizing my classroom this week getting ready for meetings and planning (for real) next week. Gearing back up. This was helpful.

    I think when we undertake inquiry with young kids we have to be pretty clear about our purpose – if we are after “learning” then most of us would accept that learning involves a change in long term memory – and although I am certain that many of our students are “engaged” during inquiry learning I am uncertain whether inquiry in schools often leads to any significant changes in content or process memory of the students involved -

    The things we ask our teachers to consider when they are planning inquiry topics for kids is how they will avoid the following:

    We encourage our teachers in New Zealand to plan inquiry learning with great thoughtfulness – it is much harder work for teachers than direct teaching - all relevant cognitive processes are triggered and scaffolded for - and they work to ensure the right kind of domain is used – student inquiry for intuitive deep conceptual knowledge rather than operational factual procedural knowledge.

    Arti, I actually get nervous when you offer insight here on my blog because it’s offering my process warts and all that leaves me feeling quite vulnerable because of your day job expertise and background. You always point me towards great resources and I would have to admit that I do not read enough educational texts - when edubloggers quote Postman and Ilich and Gatto, I have no idea because I haven’t read any of their oft quoted work. (Actually likewise when Bill Kerr quotes Alan Kay.) I would actually be interested in your opinion on what we have done and whether I am actually kidding myself and wasting the kids’ time. Your points that you outline are exactly what I need to be thinking about (along with all the other things my job entails) and to get to specifics, I think it would be great to have a Skype chat with you if you could spare the time.



    1. “Knowing that” if I understand it correctly is navigating a chosen topic successfully because the student has some familiarity and confidence in knowing where to look and knowing if something answers their question and “knowing how” is the process of generating questions, topics, collecting information, making sense of that information and then structuring it into a solution or maybe a presentation(???). Therefore, while working with a topic of their own choice the “knowing that” aspect works better than if they are then forced into a new topic where the familiarity factor is gone. It would be a bit like first getting kids to go from Point A to Point B in their own neighbourhood, then next time dropping them in a foreign city and asking them to go from A to B again. And if I am getting everyone in my class to pursue totally different topics, then the front loading is nearly impossible - all of a sudden my colleagues corralling their students into one topic with choices within that topic look pretty smart. However, if my goal is to get the kids thinking about effective ways to communicate information and ideas to others (mastering powerpoint or any sort of multimedia might be a goal :-) ) then the content could be seen to be secondary.



    2. Your articles point to the concept of guided discovery being a superior method as opposed to minimal guidance discovery learning. Looking back at last term’s work I can see that the research part could be classified as the “discovery approach” while the modelling, explicit hands on design work, rubric driven presentation process the class worked on could be termed “guided discovery.” With a process and expectations for presentation (and yes, that is also worthwhile learning although it could not be reasonably be termed “inquiry”) in place, is abandoning the idea of a previously encountered topic a recipe for disaster because it will be impossible to “front load” 30 students at once? It certainly is easy to model expectations in how to communicate their final content - but is one topic for the whole class the way to go? How is that topic or issue identified? More questions for me as my high moral ground is swamped by the high tides of effective practice!



    3. In a task that allows students to choose their own topic, the “to be learned” component is extremely difficult to standardise across the class.



    4. This point seems to be challenging me (rightly so). What exactly do I want the students to gain from this exercise? How to communicate to others, effective public speaking, designing supporting visuals, giving appropriate feedback to others, preparing for the presentation - all worthy learning goals straight out of the English curriculum. What about the inquiry component? I suppose I was wanting to put the students in the position of being able to share interesting learning with their peers and expose them to ideas and topics that they might not naturally gravitate towards. This term’s approach was meant to be a challenge to expand their boundaries using inquiry questions to work towards gaining a basic understanding of a new concept and once again, share it with their peers. Are my expectations too high? I was working on the idea that there are so many possible things to explore that gaining skills that enable students to track down likely resources and navigate through the information overload with discriminatory skills would be a realistic way to impart information literacy skills.



    5. Maybe my take is that the younger students start grappling with inquiry methodology then by the time they get to be 15 -19 years of age, they will be more proficient practitioners then those who have been hand fed information and concepts without any choice along the way.



    It’s been a challenge for me to embrace my own “discovery learning” via the internet. I have been an online reader and investigator of ideas and topics for over a dozen years but leveraging the web using read/write tools has changed the way I can learn - like I’m doing right now. The “digital natives” I teach are not very information savvy - I am trying to get them manipulating and making judgements about the validity of their own interests and possible interests (you don’t know what you don’t know about!) - unfortunately, as Darren Draper wrote recently on his blog (I can’t find the exact quote), the more I blog the less I realise I know. You yourself, Arti, have pointed out that terrier-like, I interrogate my own practice and hold it up the light to see of it is on track. I know you wouldn’t waste your precious time leaving a comment that won’t be taken on board and while I can’t promise that I’ll plug all the holes in my inquiry practice in quick time, you can rest assured I know that they are there and need addressing. Thanks again for taking the time. I really appreciate and value it.



    And Doug, we’d better consider Arti’s points well before we launch into any cross cultural exchanges!

    Here’s a bit of a thought I had earlier today, before I read Artichoke’s comment, which I think is worth careful study. The idea of there being a “how” and a “what” to consider in teaching refers to the need to account for both declarative and procedural knowledge, both of which are necessary in any creative endeavor. Depending on what you want kids to learn, you can hold one, both, or neither of those things constant. In other words, you can specify the subject matter, the process to be followed, or both, or none of the above. We get the “tunnel of goats” phenomenon when nobody knows what’s going on, but everyone seems to be busy with it. The way inquiry pedagogy has gained acceptance among progressive educators seems to be an example of what I learned yesterday is called politician’s logic: : Something must be done; this is something; therefore, we must do it. Reformers of all stripes put this principle to work on a regular basis.



    Guided inquiry is a broad term that might involve the class and teacher in doing a whole group project that’s mapped out every step of the way - as a demonstration, more or less - so kids get the idea of what we want them to do. Loosening the reins a bit and allowing the kids choices of subject matter assumes that they know how to identify problems, ask focused questions, locate resources, test hypotheses, generalize conclusions, report their findings, and evaluate what they’ve learned. That’s a lot to ask of anyone who isn’t particularly interested or experienced. I think there are ways of leaving options open for choosing, but I also think that inquiry as a concept has to first be embraced by teachers as an overall stance toward everything they do.



    Taking it slow, and keeping a tight rein seems like the only sensible approach. I am too loose, as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, with the planning end to responsibly manage what would otherwise be chaos. And too often that’s what I get; things spin out of control even when I start out with a tight grip on them. Last year I had an aha moment when I discovered that the word ‘research’ means nothing to kids. Of course, there is also the possibility that inquiry itself is reduced to a cookbook response to a prompt. What’s the use of that?



    The most concise way that I can express my current view of inquiry pedagogy, or any pedagogy, is to say that I prefer to see lots of structure, with just a little bit of wiggle room. I am not a specialist in any of this, and there are few examples of effective inquiry pedagogy in my personal experience, as both student and teacher. Direct instruction is sometimes the very thing necessary in order to move forward, and it needn’t be discredited as somehow regressive. In everything I do, I want to proceed with caution and skepticism. Even the sacred cow of constructivism is being roasted in my thinking these days. But that’s a story for another day.

7 Tips for Presenting More Confidently

  1. Seize the Opportunity. A key building block for developing confidence as a speaker is to speak, and speak often. Seize every opportunity you can, personally and professionally, to speak in public. If someone invites you to “stand up and say a few words,” or a co-worker asks you to make a presentation, jump at the chance. Don’t wait to be asked…volunteer!

When you think and act as though something is true, you help make it happen.

  11. Make anxiety your ally. Many people get a pounding heart, buckling knees, sweaty palms, a dry mouth and “butterflies” are pre-speech symptoms. The key to conquering anxiety is not to abolish it, but to learn to use it effectively. Rather than squandering your energy of nervousness and fear, use your natural physiological reactions to think faster and talk more fluently and with greater intensity.

So be sure to rehearse your presentation out loud- even in front of a “dress rehearsal” audience if you can.
