I am excited to announce an important new project being launched by an international group of leading authors on “The Impact of Open Source Software on Education.” The group will post their personal perspectives on OSS to Terra Incognita, highlighting themes of particular interest, and then we will move the postings and comments to WikiEducator, where they will be made available as open educational resources. During the days each posting is active on Terra Incognita, the author will be available to respond to feedback and engage in a group dialogue with you.
An interview with Ruth Sabean, assistant vice provost for educational technology in UCLA’s College of Letters and Science, kicks off the series on March 12. Ruth ran the evaluation process at UCLA that resulted in the selection of the open source application Moodle. She will be available for several days afterward to respond to your questions and exchange ideas. Please visit the OSS in Education project site to learn more about the project, the schedule, topics, and the list of authors. We welcome participation in the project in a number of ways including posting comments and questions, challenging conventional wisdom, sharing your perspectives on OSS in education, promoting the Series among your colleagues, and making good use of the resources we create in your classes, papers, and other projects.
The series has grown out of the increasingly diverse dialogue that is surfacing about open source software, which is truly becoming an international phenomena that is impacting higher education and larger society. For example, South Africa just joined a growing number of countries including Brazil, China, Spain, India, and Malaysia whose governments are adopting open source software as an alternative to propriety offerings. Although some of these governments are adopting OSS because of the financial implications, many are also trying to reduce the risk associated with depending on a proprietary vendor.
Activity in educational OSS has been quite international. There are many examples of major projects initiated and hosted throughout the world in countries ranging from Australia and New Zealand, to the U.S., France, South Africa, and beyond. In addition, there are at least two collaboration projects— SourceForge Education and Eduforge — which were founded on opposite sides of the globe to support the development of OSS in education. In addition, the growing role of open source software in higher education is also reflected in increased adoption rates at institutions. This, of course, impacts the required competencies at these universities, the economics of doing business, and the shape of the commercial software sector that relies on revenues generated from higher education.
We hope you’ll join us on March 12 for the start of the Impact of Open Source Software on Education series. This should be a lot of fun. Your comments and posts will contribute to the stock of open educational resources that will be available to support a better understanding of the free Open Source Software movement and what it means for education.

Hi There Orca. I can not read Mandarin, but I see you have interest in Wikieducator. I am looking into it from here in New Zealand, and am curious to find out what interests you have in it?
